KARTINA The extraordinary
fury of Katrina’s winds took its toll on the forested area nestled in the
pastoral countryside of Old Military Road.
Our vineyard, through the grace of God, for the most part, stood strong
only sustaining damage in the extreme north end where several large trees blew
down breaking trellis wires and support posts.
Fortunately, we had finished harvesting the last of our red grapes in
the week before the storm.
We were able to bring in some generators power to run the critical operations of the winery for the 5 weeks we were without power. We managed to birth our Cynthia/Norton red wine in excellent shape through this period while maintaining safe temperatures for our white just finishing fermentation. Except for an oak tree that damaged the unique tile roof of our tasting room, the winery building itself and its machinery were spared. We have cleaned up most of the areas around the winery and the roads leading in. Although the landscape has changed and the filtered light of our upland bottom forest has given way to a brighter, intense light from the west, the enduring beauty and softness of our surrounding countryside is returning. We are looking forward to an emotion filled, great Holiday Season. Our culture’s great passion for celebrating the importance of family, friends and food will be more important than ever in healing the profound wounds wrought by Katrina. Come visit us at Pontchartrain Vineyards.
CBS FILM Our vineyard was used in a scene for the CBS film "Locust" which will be aired Sunday, April 24th at 7 or 8 p.m. Other scenes were filmed on Old Military Road and the general area.

NEWS FLASH The Wall Street Journal, Tastings / by Dorothy J. Gaiter and John Brecher, “The 50 States of American Wine”, Friday, April 11, 2003. The following is a quote about Pontchartrain Vineyards from this article about regional wineries.
“This isn’t charity. These wineries often make very good wine in small amounts, with each bottle getting a great deal of attention. On top of that, you can’t beat them for their sense of place. We were in New Orleans this week to speak to the American Society of Newspaper Editors and picked up a bottle of Pontchartrain Vineyards white wine that’s sold only in Louisiana. The wine was slightly sweet, but the back label was even sweeter, assuring us that it was “endorsed by a member of the ‘Butte Larose Fire Department as the perfect wine for hot boiled crawfish” and other local fare.”
